Stop Pushing So Hard

Stop Pushing so Hard

As you begin trying to figure out how to get out of your creative rut and finally get unstuck in your life, you need to understand that sometimes the best thing to do is take a step back. When you keep pushing and forcing things to happen, you are often only
making it worse and harder for yourself. My mom always said, “don’t force it”, if it doesn’t fit, it’s not right”. Here are some things to know about not pushing so hard in order to get unstuck in your life.

You Can’t Force Inspiration to Come to You

Everyone wants to be inspired, whether it is inspiration to create something beautiful, to participate in one of your passions, or to think outside the box at work on a big project. Unfortunately, this is not something you can force on yourself. There are many ways to
find inspiration, but it won’t come to you because you will it to. Sometimes, it all comes down to you pushing too hard. You can’t force yourself to feel things, just like you cant force more creativity or feeling unstuck in your life. Try to live in the moment and let
things happen as they will.

Let Things Happen Naturally

While it is good to put forth an effort any time you want a change or are trying to accomplish something, there comes a point when you find yourself beating your head against a wall, you may just have to step back and see what happens. When you have done everything in your power, you have to accept how things are right now and just let things come in their own time. Maybe you are in a little creative slump right now, but if you keep forcing inspiration, you are only going to make it that much harder to find it.

Find Inspiration in Unexpected Ways

When you are ready to get back out there and find your next big inspiration, look in unexpected places. Read a new book, listen to a new podcast, watch something not in your typical genre, reach out to an old friend you haven’t talked to in a while, go somewhere you have never been. Sitting 10 minutes a day quietly with your eyes closed and letting your mind settle on your breath or the hum of the furnace or some background noise, when done with regularity, can be a great way to let inspired thoughts in. You never know when inspiration will strike, but you need to get out there and find new experiences in order to
find it.

Let Your Life Change Organically

Change is completely natural, but we as humans often fight against it. Stop fighting, raise the white flag, and let changes become improvements. They don’t always have to be a bad thing. Letting go isn’t always easy but it’s always rewarding.

Words on Inspiration

Find Inspiration in Unexpected Ways

As we navigate the ebbs and flows of life, at times we tend to feel stuck. Do you feel like you are in a creative slump lately? If so, what you may be missing is the right type of inspiration. It is easy to be motivated by deadlines and finances, but this doesn’t really work when it comes to your creativity, whether you use it for hobbies, art, your daily life, writing, or even in your job. Here are some unexpected ways you can find inspiration.

Get Writing

Start writing absolutely everything down. Try the stream of consciousness form of journaling where you just write whatever comes to mind. Write good idea and bad ideas, write fiction or poems, write detailed to-do lists, and write what you did today. Write about your goals and dreams, write about your strengths and weaknesses. Write about your accomplishments and failures. This is a really effective way at learning more about yourself and understanding where and how you got stuck, and why you ended up in a creative rut. It’s a great way to release the overflow of information that can constantly run in our minds.

Read Something New

Always keep reading and learning! Reading provides some amazing benefits when you feel stuck and uninspired. The trick here is not to just stay in your own reading comfort zone. Find a different genre, a new author, something you never thought you would be interested in. Go to a completely different section of the library or book store, pick up something at random, and just start reading. It stimulates new thoughts that may be just what you’re looking for to be inspired.

Find New Surroundings

If you do the same thing every day and always see the same thing, it can be really hard to find inspiration. Especially when the gray Cincinnati weather hits! Go outside, find a new place to explore, and change your surroundings. This alone can be amazing for getting inspired, and getting some brand new ideas. Spending time outside, no matter what the weather, is always good the the body, mind and soul. There is a natural energy field that emanates from the earth. Walking outside lets you tap into this energy and can be invigorating.

Reduce Your Distractions

You may also be dealing with a creative slump due to all the distractions in your life. Start reducing them if you feel they are causing creative blocks, from things and situations, to people. A great way to do this is to sit quietly for 10 – 15 minutes every day. Turn the volume off on your cell (but you can still set the timer). Close your eyes and feel your breath. Nothing is that urgent that is has to happen at a moments notice. Give yourself this “adult time out” and you’ll gain clarity and calm.

Practice Self-Care

For so many years I neglected this truly important act. I think as women, we are raised to give and led to believe it’s selfish to be concerned with ourselves. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Sometimes we have to put our spouse or children or job etc…, you name it, first, but that leaves the sometimes you need to put You first. You are not just a mother or father, friend, neighbor, executive or co-worker. You are a human being that has needs you need to take care of yourself, including your physical, mental, and emotional health. You can’t fill from an empty cup. If you are depleted, you have nothing to give. Practicing self-care can help you relax and help with gaining more clarity. When you are replenished, there is more to give. If you are giving from an empty place, it could even cause one to feel resentment, and that’s not good for anyone. So take time to take a relaxing stroll while listening to your favorite music, book a massage, stop for coffee, or my favorite, have a facial of course!

With the holidays rapidly approaching, find your inspiration and make sure you enjoy your life to the fullest.
